Nansemond Indian Tribe Powwow
As part of HistoryFest, the 400th anniversary celebration in Virginia Beach, a powwow was held to honor the indiginous people of the eastern shore and what we now call the Commonwealth of Virginia. The ceremony was held in an area of Virginia Beach called "America's First Region". The part played by Native Americans in helping the original settlers survive has only recently been given proper recognition. It was great to see them taking part in a celebration of America's history.
The Powwow was moderated by the Chief of a Siouxan tribe whose name, I'm sorry to say, was more complicated than I could grasp. The Chief and Assistant Chief of the Nansemond tribe were there as well. It was truly an honor to get such an up close and personal look at the fascinating history and customs of these beautiful people. Their traditional regalia was overwhelmingly impressive. The Siouxan Chief explained it would be impossible to give a brief overview of everything represented by their clothing because, "like life, it is ever changing" and contains bits of the past and present. They played drums, sang and danced. There was also a special dance to honor our brave veterans and they said they do this weekly. All veterans in the audience were invited to come forward and join the ceremony no matter what their ethnic origin. It was an unexpected and touching experience we'll never forget.
